To answer your question, yes if the hard drive is not bad, you should be able to stick it in a new PC as a slave drive, and then be able to access it in the "My Computer" from Windows. Just go and copy and paste anything you want (With this you should be able to get all of your old files back) and then get rid of the hard drive.
