My child hates school. How can we help her overcome this?

My 5 year old daughter experienced a rather traumatic incident in school last week. She was never very thrilled about going to school but this event has reinforced her dislike for the school environment and teachers there. We have spoken with the school about what happened and the school has accepted some responsibility and would like to work with us to encourage our daughter to return. Trouble is, our daughter is adamant that she doesn't want to return. Dragging our daughter to school kicking and screaming is not a viable option for us as it would just make matters worse. Has anyone gone through this? What would you do to motivate a child to attend? Do you think her attitude might improve with time? We feel quite helpless about this.
