Why was Akon on American Idol with Gwen Stefani with his underwear showing? What's the point of that?

Everytime I see guys wearing their pants like that, it really annoys me. He had on a belt, and the pants were pulled up in front, and intentionally low in the back. What is stylish about half your underwear showing, and the imprint of your crack showing? What type of statement does that make? This is a serious question? Do they think it looks cool, y, tough, what? A few years ago, some women where doing the same thing, with their actual crack showing, without underwear over them. I'm glad that phase left quickly.
